Tartufo d’ Alba- the king of white truffles

November 1, 2008

Tartufo bianco is still ten days away from being top quality, I am told. Tourists have been eating them since the end of September, but, to be really good, white truffles need cold weather. Call me a tourist, but I had some in my possession last night. Here are my wine-fueled thoughts:

"They are not perfect yet. But I have a half kilo in my pocket. I smell fantastic, and not in some  over the top frat boy with too much cologne on kind of way. There is a slowly permeating muskiness that creeps up on you when you have a pocketful of truffles. The sensation is not erotic, per se, but more like when you awake next to someone you love with a smile and just a little drool on the pillow."

If those are your wine-fueled thoughts, you need to be sure to keep the tank full. What a lovely description! Left me with a warm feeling and a need to track down some truffles sooner than later. Beautiful writing. Cheers!

Thanks, Patrick. The tank is regularly refilled- I just decided to start writing the thoughts instead of concentrating on philosophy and provenance…
